Whilst the letters cover many Casualties Union topics and events, for the most part they are informal, friendly letters, rather than official correspondence. They also cover personal and family matters.

Biographical note

Eric Claxton was the founder of Casualties Union. He was Chairman until 1969 when he stepped down and was given the role and title of Founder. He was awarded an MBE in 1943 and OBE in 1964.

Helen Margaret Nicholson established the Newcastle study circle in 1949 and gradually became more involved in the running of Casualties Union, holding the positions of Editor of the journal, Vice President and Chairman at various points. She was awarded an MBE in 1977.

Claxton and Nicholson were married in 1985 after both had been widowed.
