Description

1 autograph letter, signed, from the American Quaker Samuel Emlen (1766-1837) to William Allen; discussing writings of the anti-slavery campaigner Thomas Clarkson (1760-1846) (probably his Portraiture of Quakerism, 1806) and the prospects for abolition in the U.S.A., and mentioning American mutual acquaintances such as the teacher, chemist and philanthropist John Griscom (1774-1852), the brothers George Dillwyn (1738-1820) and William Dillwyn (1743-1824) (the latter was Emlen's father-in-law) and "R. Jones", perhaps the Philadelphia preacher Rebecca Jones (1739-1817).
