Biographical note

The objectives of the Regional and European meetings are to:

  • Extend and build IEA membership especially in under-represented areas;
  • Organise scientific meetings on aspects of epidemiology and statistics relevant and topical to particular geographical area;
  • Provide a forum for more frequent meetings in addition to the triennial ISM;
  • The organisation of the meeting is initiated by a Regional IEA Council member or other IEA member(s) in the region or on EC, Council or Regional Committee; meetings can also be sponsored by the Regional Office of WHO and/or other appropriate national or international body.

    The original educational programme was developed with the support of the Milbank Memorial Fund and the Commonwealth Fund, and later, the WHO and the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO). In 1968, an Educational Secretary was appointed to support and co-ordinate these activities, and by 1971, 10 WHO-sponsored seminars had been held.
