1902 ms and later typed copies/versions of "Pros and cons re the establishment of a branch in South Africa" [initially 5pg ms notes of a meeting between Henry Wellcome & Pearson]. Also inc. c. 1902 a bundle of papers containing notes of futher meetings between HSW & George Pearson re SA, also memos & London's copies of corresp. from re South African business. Manby have annotations by Henry Wellcome. Inc. references to: * local chemists - Lennons; Heyenes Mthew & Co; Petersens; * local areas - Durban; pictermaritzourg; East London; Port Elizabeth; Kimberley; Cape Town; * Finance - prices; sales figures - inc. summary for Jan 1900; * Offices & Wharehouses - site of head office; copies of details of shipments of goods, sent to EW Raven, Cape Town; * Staff - professional, clerical and warehouse staff [references to black and 'kaffir' labour rates; copy of letter from FA Rogers re Dr Morris acting as locum for Dr Smith SA; notes of meeting with Mr Raven Aug 1901, re sales techniques in SA; * Advertising; brands; potential markets; sales techniques. Some further papers dated 1907-1922 were collated re. company history and inc. a chronology 19058-1912 for Burroughs Wellcome & Co. in SA; 1905 letter from staff thanking Henry Wellcome for copies of 'Life of a Bee'.
