Biographical note
Ansell, George Frederick (1826-1880), chemist and assayer, born in Surrey. He was an assistant to Dr A. W. Hofmann at the Royal School of Mines. He also investigated the danger of explosions in coal mines caused by the accumulation of carburetted hydrogen or fire-damp. He died in 1880.
