Description

Many of these are entertainments were performed by nurses. Photograph 1 shows a Fancy Dress Ball, 1 May 1914. Photograph 2 shows four dancers, two male and two ‘females’ (men dressed up), outside Retreat, early 20th century. Photograph 3 shows nurses dressed up as geishas, c 1904. Photographs 4-6 show nurses in the Retreat grounds, wearing fancy dress. On the reverse of photograph 6 the nurses are named: Sister Sarah, Rowntree, [?Nurse] Keys, Parker, Swain, Sister Margaret, Miss Darley, Bancroft, Wood, Cole, Tindle, Sister Blanche, Fisher, Sister Phyllis, Clark, von Hallé, Holmes, Zauker. Photograph 7 shows two actors, presumably nurses (the one on the left is a woman dressed up as a man).
