Notebook containing notes on materia medica and botany, with copy letters to various correspondents, mainly on the same subjects. Correspondents include Friedrich August Flückiger (1828–1894), Swiss pharmacologist, Emil Bretschneider (1833–1901), German specialist on Chinese botany, J.E. Planchon (1823–1888), French pharmacologist and botanist, George Bidie (1830–1913), Hugh Francis Clarke Cleghorn (1820–1895) and Lestock Wilson Stewart (1824–1876), surgeons in Madras, Thomas Edwin Burton Brown (1833–1911), surgeon at Lahore, Henry Fletcher Hance (1827–1886), botanist in Hong Kong, George Henry Kendrick Thwaites (1812–1882), botanist in Ceylon, Robert Lambert Playfair (1828–1899), author and colonial administrator, John Kirk (1832–1922), naturalist and political agent, Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817–1911), botanist, William Munro (1818–1880), army officer and botanist, and William Allen Hanbury (1823–1898). Several of the copy letters are written from Palazzo Orengo, Thomas Hanbury's property at Mortola on the Italian Riviera, and the location of the Hanbury Gardens, for which Daniel Hanbury procured many exotic plants via his worldwide scientific contacts; there are lists of seeds from Australia and South Africa for example sent to Mortola at ff. 126v.-128. In addition, the volume contains reports of Hanbury's travels in southern Italy and Sicily in May 1872 during which he visited various facilities for manufacturting herbal products (ff.103-111 passim). With coloured sketches of specimens observed in Italian gardens on the reverse of the front flyleaf and at f. 120. There are various press cuttings of general interest pasted inside the front cover. 1 volume 1 volume: approx. 230 x 190 mm., 184 ff. (original pagination 1-359 and unnumbered). Half calf binding, with grey-green buckram-covered boards and marbled end leaves and edges. Front board stamped in gilt 'N.B.11'. 3 loose enclosures inside front cover.
