File consists of correspondence relating to the Gaddum Memorial Award awarded by the British Pharmacological Society (B.P.S.). The award was created in 1966 with the first award being made in 1967 and Vane won the award in 1968. Details include:

1974 fifth award (won by S.H. Snyder). Letter from Professor J.F. Mitchell, General Secretary of the British Pharmacological Society, to B.P.S. committee members enclosing a list of nominations for the "Fifth Gaddum Lecturer 1974", dated 9 May 1974 (list not present). Letter from Mitchell requesting nominations and giving some suggestions (1 April 1974). Letter from Vane to Mitchell regarding the most outstanding people on the list (8 April 1974). Handwritten letter from Mitchell to Vane, 13 May 1974, with general comments about candidates for the 1974 award. CV's for the eleven candidates together with a letter of support from their proposers (letters all date from April 1974). Letter from Vane to Mitchell with his comments on the candidates (10 May 1974). List of all the nominees for the award with Vane's order of preference and handwritten comments, sent to Mitchell 17 May 1974. Typed letter from Mitchell to B.P.S. Committee and Gaddum Trustees setting out the votes for the candidates and suggesting the potential winner (23 May 1974). Handwritten note from Mitchell to Vane, received 24 May 1974, with his comments on the voting. Typed letter from Mitchell to Vane informing him that S.H. Snyder was the winner of the award and that Vane's proposed candidate had not been successful and a second letter sent to all committee members and trustees confirming the winner of the award (both dated 31 May 1974).

1977 sixth award (won by S.Z. Langer). Typed general letter with handwritten comments directed at Vane from Mitchell to the B.P.S. Committee and Gaddum Trustees referring to the three nominees for the sixth prize and enclosing CV's and supporting statements for each candidate (papers present). Letter from Vane to Mitchell, 27 July 1976, confirming that he was a Founder Trustee of the Gaddum Lectureship and setting out his difficulties because there were two Wellcome employees on the list of potential award winners. Typed letter from Mitchell to B.P.S. Committee and Gaddum Trustees setting out the votes for the candidates and suggesting the potential winner (undated) with handwritten comments for Vane.

1978 seventh award (won by A.D. Smith). Letter from G.P. Lewis to the Gaddum Trustees and B.P.S. Committee setting out the candidates for the award and providing the supporting papers for each candidate (undated). Letter from Mitchell to Vane, discussing the quality of the candidates (7 July 1978). Letter from G.P. Lewis to Vane, 10 July 1978, discussing Vane's comments about the low number of candidates. Letter from Vane to Lewis, 13 July 1978, disagreeing with Lewis's approach to the award and explaining why he believed it was the Trustees who were to make the final decision on the award. Letter from Lewis to the Trustees dated 27 September 1978, giving the result of the vote for the seventh Gaddum Lecturer and suggesting a new approach for forthcoming elections. Vane's response to the proposed changes to the election procedure including supporting letters from other Trustees is included (dated 13 October 1978). Letter from Lewis to Vane, 1 November 1978, suggesting a new structure for the Gaddum Memorial Lecture Committee and Vane's supportive response (6 November 1978).

1980 eighth award (won by S. Moncada). Letter from Vane to Professor A.M. Barrett, Department of Pharmacology, University of Leeds, suggesting a candidate for the Gaddum award and soliciting his view (16 June 1980). Letter from Professor Barrett to the committee enclosing the supporting papers for candidates and discussing the nominations (22 July 1980). Letter from Vane to Barrett regarding the nominations (13 August 1980). Supporting papers for a late nomination circulated 13 August 1980. Letter from Barrett to Vane, 27 August 1980, listing the results of the vote and declaring the winner assuming no opposition.

1982 ninth award (won byJ. Hughes). Letter from Barrett to Vane dated 6 September 1982 setting out the nominees and enclosing their supporting papers (included).
