Cavalli-Sforza was professor of Genetics at the Istituto di Genetica, University of Pavia, Italy. He later became Professor of Genetics, Stanford University Medical Centre, California, USA. Between 1961 and 1974 Cavalli-Sforza carried out a number of blood group studies on the pygmy populations of Africa. He was also involved in a study of the Leccese population of southern Italy.
