About this work

Description

From a folder inscribed "Oxford" and "Nuffield limbs". Correspondence between Peter Carter, thalidomide parent and co-founder of the Thalidomide Society, and staff at the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Original contact was prompted by an article that appeared in the Guardian on 31st August 1962, reporting that specialists at the Nuffield were offering to keep a register of congenital limb defects "for the benefit of thalidomide damaged and similarly affected children until the authorities finally decide what should be done for them".

Includes instructions for exercises for the Carters' daughter, information for cutlery she would find it easier to use. Ends with expressions of concern that the services offered by the Nuffield might not continue.

There is also correspondence with a technician offering his services in creating serviceable prostheses for thalidomide-damaged children.
