While employed by Springfield College, Massachusetts, USA, Clarke acted as Senior Research Assistant at the American University Hospital, Beirut, Lebanon. He later worked in the Department of Anthropology, University of Durham, the Department of Physical Anthropology, University of Oxford and then in the Special Serology Unit, Iranian National Blood Transfusion Service, Tehran, Iran.
