About this work

Description

The International Commission of Physicians and Environmentalists to Investigate the Health and Environmental Consequences of Nuclear Weapons Production was a project of the Cambridge-based IPPNW, in consultation with the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IEER) in Maryland.

The first major report of the Commission was given by Arjun Makhijani, at the Tenth IPPNW World Congress, Stockholm. The report was a collaboration between IPPNW and the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research, who acted as technical consultants. The study was published as a book, Radioactive Heaven and Earth: the health and environmental effects of nuclear weapons testing, in, on, and above the earth (1991). The report evaluated the global health and environmental impact of underground and atmospheric nuclear testing.

The study was funded by the W. Alton Jones Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Ruth Mott Fund, and the HKH Foundation.
