Biographical note

The first archaeological excavations of the Roman Fort (Blatobulgium) at the Birrens took place in 1895 and were undertaken by Christison. There were further excavations in 1936-1937 and 1962-1967.

The Excavation diary from 1895 is held by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historic Monuments of Scotland, MS 201/1, along with further material relating to the site (Canmore site no. NY28SW 31).
