Biographical note

Joan McLaren was born in Poona, India, in 1918 and came to England in 1937, soon thereafter beginning her training in physiotherapy. After several jobs, she came to work at the Bristol Maternity Hospital where, in 1975, she was appointed Superintendent. She was a proponent of the idea of physiotherapists specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology and gave appropriate ante natal classes and courses. On retiring she became a City Councillor and was elected Lord mayor of Bristol in 1995. Ms McLaren died in Bristol in 2010.
