Correspondence and ephemera collected from Ashton's early life and during his time in various professional posts. The papers relate largely to his appointment to these posts and to his social life whilst in them, rather than to the professional work he undertook. Some correspondence relates to visits made and lectures given although this does not generally reveal much about the details of his professional research and is more personal in nature. Includes programmes for theatrical performances and for award ceremonies, invitations, press cuttings, testimonials to Ashton's character, illustrations, and photographs.
