Circulars

Product literature and promotional material, mostly produced by Burroughs Wellcome & Co (BW&Co), 1884-1891.

The advertising material contained in these volumes covers BW&Co's growth from a firm licensed to sell the pharmaceutical products of other companies, to a manufacturing concern in its own right.

Included are BW&Co product lists and price lists; BW&Co produced 'Medical Ready Reference Books' (for the medical profession) and reprints of articles from established medical publications (such as the British Medical Journal) advocating certain BW&Co products.

Some of the BW&Co brands for which material exists herein, include: Forced March, Voice Tabloids, Hazeline, Lanoline, Kepler and Strophanthus; as well as material on the different brands of bottled water on the market. Also included are early examples of letters from BW&Co Travelling Salesmen; a 'Report on the Exhibit of Messrs. Burroughs Wellcome & Co at the Sanitary Exhibition, Bolton, 1887' (reprint from the Sanitary record) and copies of Progress in Pharmacy, 1st January 1888 and Successful Pharmacy, 1st January 1889, which give detailed descriptions of the company.

To indicate the company's awareness of overseas markets, some of the advertisements are in Spanish and there is also material on the Australian market for BW&Co's products

The volume has been conserved, items have been removed from the original guard books and remounted in sleeves and ringbinders. This enables researchers to easily read items (front and reverse) without damage to the original. The original order has been retained.

Due to the size of the original Guardbook it has been split into 3 albums.
