About this work

Description

Transcription of an alleged document from the reign of James II. Being a pledge of allegiance to James II, plans to restore him to the throne of England and a pledge to raise 30,000 men against the Pretender Orange.
Allegedly signed at Marlborough 22 March 1691/2 by William, Archbishop of Canterbury; Thomas, Bishop of Rochester; Salisbury; Basil Ferebracy; John Wilcockse; and Cornbury.
Two notes accompany this page. One states that it is an exact copy of a paper preserved at Matson, the Gloucester seat of George Selwyn Esq, MP 1754-1780. The paper hung in a closet in the drawing room and was labelled as "The Original of Robert Young's Association"
A second note in a different 18th century hand states that the document was a forgery by two men "of no character" called Blackhead and Young. The note continues to say that according to Johnson's 'Life of Sprat' the document was thought to have sufficient credibility to be submitted to the investigation of the Privy Council. This reference to the Life of Sprat comes from Samuel Johnson's Lives of the Poets series, published in 3 volumes between 1779 and 1781.
