About this work

Description

Patologia tumorum praeter naturam: in Italian. There is an historiated pen-drawn title, in which the name of the scribe and the date have been partly obliterated in ink. The second leaf contains a full-page pen-drawing of a surgical operation on a female breast-perhaps allegorical, possibly by the same artist as that of the three preceding MSS. The MS. is an anonymous student's notes of lectures, given at the Arcispedale di Santo Spirito in Rome [cf. p. 173, line 21 'in questo Archiospedale']. It may be approximately dated by the reference on p. 149 line 17 to 'Gio[vanni] Sculteto nell' explicattione della Tavola XVIII del suo Armamentario Chirurgico'. Produced in Rome.

Biographical note

Of the obliterated inscription on the title-page, the following is still legible: 'Philippus Paulus / Auctor Romanus / hunc librum scripsit [anno] nostrae / salutis M....' The text of this MS. is identical with that of MS. 3816, though by a different but contemporary hand. No record of a P. Paulus has been found, though there were several Physicians or Surgeons about this period of the family name of 'Paoli'.
