About this work

Description

This group originated in a special committee set up to query candidates in the 1929 General Election about their views on birth control; after the election the work was continued in the form of a Birth Control Information Centre, a clearing-house for birth control information. In 1930 the Ministry of Health finally conceded permission for the giving of birth control advice in local government maternity clinics, and there was also a major international birth control conference in Zurich. As a result, the BCIC undertook the task of forming a permanent nucleus for international work and became the BCIIC. Troubles arose in 1938 with controversy over the funding of Edith How-Martyn's Indian tour, and she resigned.
