About this work

Description

A return describing plants of medicinal value used by the Indians of Guatemala. Martínez Durán (1964) p. 344 comments that this Recollect friar made the only return from Guatemala in response to the Real Cédula of 14 March 1783 requesting samples of useful plants, and information on them. After making it clear that his private interest in medicinal plants has only been pursued within the capital city, and after confirming that he has there found none of the local flora in José Quer, Flora española, 4 vols., Madrid, J. Ibarra, 1762[-64], Herrarte describes some 36 plant and animal remedies used by the Indians, some of them marvellous, and others more matter-of-fact.
