    Deaths from zymotic diseases. Infectious Disease Notification Act. Measles. Infectious Hospital. population of 31,683, gives a mortality of 11'3 per thousand, which is exactly the same as the previous year. Following is a detailed account of deaths in age groups:— Under 1 year 1 and under 5 years 130 34 164 under 5 years. 5 and under 15 years 18 15 ,, ,, 25 ,, 25 ,, ,, 65 ,, 14 80 - 196 over 5 years. 65 and upwards 84 The totals for the respective months were:— January 41 July 23 February 44 August 34 March 40 September 29 April ... 27 October 20 May ... 25 November 24 June .. 18 December 35 The deaths from zymotic diseases (that is diseases which are regarded as due to the invasion of the system from without by a definite “ferment,” or poison, which grows and multiplies in the body) were during the year 1895 :— Scarlet Fever ... ... ... ... Enteric, or Typhoid ... ... ... 1 Whooping Cough ... ... ... 5 Diarrhoea ... ... ... ... 19 Measles.. ... ... ... ... 8 Diptheria ... ... ... ... 3 The number of cases of diseases reported to me under the Act were as follows : — Scarlet Fever of these, 12 were removed to our Infectious Hospital. Erysipelas... Enteric Fever of these, 1 was removed to Hospital. Infectious Disease Notification 42 30 5 Diptheria ... Puerperal Fever 5 1 In my opinion, measles should be included in the list of diseases to be notified. The careless way in which children having had measles are allowed to run out and go back to school should not be permitted. It is the cause of a large proportion of deaths from bronchitis, which so commonly follows measles. Our own Infectious Hospital is situated well out of the town, towards the main Dover Road, standing in its own grounds, with available ground for increasing the size of hospital if at any time it should be required.
