Arrangement

The series follows the original arrangement whereby the files are arranged chronologically, with papers from the senior committees (General Management Committee, Executive Committee and Council) filed together. Many files also contain correspondence and papers relating to other Casualties Union activities and events.

One file is prefixed with a number. This forms part of an incomplete numbered filing system used by Casualties Union in the 1940s.

Biographical note

Initially, Casualties Union was run by an Executive Committee and overseen by a Council. There were also three sub-committees focused on publicity, finance and research, the latter particularly looking at improving make-up and acting techniques. A General Management Committee was introduced in the mid 1950s. As part of a constitution change in 1969 the remit of the Council was altered and the position of Chairman altered from being a senior executive officer, to being chair of an advisory body.

In 1981 a taskforce was established to consider the structure of the Union and think of ways to boost membership and better achieve the primary goal of ensuring that live casualties were used in all forms of first aid training. The resulting organisational structure proposed that the General Management Committee became the primary committee (still overseen by the Council) with several sub-committees underneath: Executive; Membership; Finance; Publicity; and Training.
