Biographical note

Ainsworth, William Francis (1807-1896), geographer and geologist, born in Exeter. In 1830, he was a founder fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He travelled to northern Syria and discovered several deposits of commercially important minerals. Ainsworth was also a writer. His best work was Travels in the Track of the Ten Thousand Greeks (1844). He died in 1896. A full description of his life and work is to be found in the Dictionary of National Biography.
