About this work

Description

A painting in Rita Simon's Traditional Linear style, depicting a swan swimming on a pond on the left and a black tree on the right. It was produced by a patient at a psychiatric day hospital. Rita Simon made the following comments about the artwork: "On the left, the idealised life represented by half a circle, on the right, bleak reality. According to the Jungian view, the inner world would be only half there, the swan is isolated, it's a narcissistic world, no sharks in the pond. The outer world is just dead". This information has been taken from notes made during conversations between Rita Simon and Wellcome staff between 1995 and 1997.

The title has been supplied by the cataloguer for identification purposes.

The work is undated
