Tills had begun his career as a technician working under Mourant. He showed aptitude for research and through study he improved his educational qualificatioins enabling him to become Mourant's Duputy at the Serological Population Genetics Laboratory. In 1972 Tills became Head of the Biological Anthropology Section, British Museum (Natural History), London. The Section was closed on 31 March 1985.
