About this work

Description

Includes notes on cases of Thomas Taylor (f.37v) and S Sumers (f.42r). There is also a letter describing the death from puerperal fever (puerperal sepsis) of Hodgkin's sister-in-law, Elizabeth Hodgkin née Howard, written in French to Achille Foville, in which Hodgkin speculates that her death and that of her baby may have been caused by some "epidemic influence" transmitted by Dr. May who attended the birth, thereby anticipating the work of Ignaz Semmelweis on doctors carrying infections and causing puerperal fever (f.92v).
