About this work

Description

The diary documents health conditions on board, including the spread of cholera. On arrival in China, Graham joined HMS Medea in an expedition against pirates (ff. 47-48, 49r.).

Mounted on the verso of the front fly leaf is a water coloured drawing of a sailor. On ff. 89-93 and rear end-papers are further drawings, mainly pen and ink sketches of HMS Apollo, the troop encampment etc., while in Brazil.

On the front fly leaf is the signature 'Thomas Graham, 1849'; following the last entry (f.51r.) is a pencilled note in another hand. 'Died at Whampoa shortly after this was written.'

On f.45v. is a reference to Graham's niece, Mary Hunter, of Ecclefechan, Dumfriesshire.

With a loose enclosure recording Graham's treatment of Midshipman Thomas Pringle following a shipboard accident, 27-28 February 1850.
