Biographical note
CIOMS was established jointly by the World Health Organisation and UNESCO in 1949 as the Council for International Organisations in Medical Sciences. Its mandate was to coordinate medical congresses and to provide an international forum for discussions around advances in biomedical science. The ILAE joined in 1954 but resigned in 1965 as it was felt that membership was not bringing any advantages to the ILAE.
