About this work
Description
Paton's expertise in underwater physiology and pharmacology generally was a resource in constant demand by the Royal Navy, and he provided consultancy throughout his career. Whilst at Oxford, Paton developed, with K W Miller and E B Smith, the breathing mixture known as 'Tri-mix' - named from the addition of nitrogen to helium and oxygen - that facilitated diving to much greater depths than had been possible hitherto.
This section comprises committee papers, correspondence and some research papers, including, for example, work on carbon dioxide intoxication, for which Paton himself acted as an experimental subject.
