Biographical note

This was a project undertaken by Christopher Clulow, Barbara Dearnley and Christopher Vincent of the Institute of Marital Studies. They attempted to obtain a profile of a unit specializing in divorce court welfare work and to review the role of the divorce court welfare officer in divorce proceedings. The research was undertaken in conjunction with staff of the Divorce Unit of the South West London Probation Service and began in April 1983. The IMS researchers worked alongside staff in preparing reports for the courts. In addition to collecting questionnaires from staff about the enquiries they dealt with, the researchers also participated in weekly meetings of the Divorce Unit, which generally alternated between case discussion and business meetings. As part of the research process, audio recordings were made of these meetings. There was also a project steering group which met infrequently.

The project resulted in the publication of a monograph: Christopher Clulow and Christopher Vincent, In the Child's Best Interests? Divorce Court Welfare and the Search for a Settlement (Tavistock Publications, 1987). This includes a full account of the project aims, methods and findings.
