About this work

Description

Press cuttings relating to a case at Barking Hospital, whereby pro-life organisation LIFE alleged that a baby was "thrown away" in an incinerator, after having been removed from the mother's womb via operation. LIFE claimed that the baby was discovered to be alive prior to incineration. These claims were refuted by pro-abortion groups and individuals, who argued that this was a premature birth via caesarian section, and not an abortion, and also that the baby was not sent for incineration. The press cuttings include letters to the editor and columns discussing the case from both pro-abortion and pro-life perspectives.

Includes subfolder labelled:"Still Born Baby". Contains press cuttings relating to a case where it was alleged that a baby, believed to have been stillborn, was found to still be alive by a doctor and continued to live for three days. 1979.

Folder 2 of 3: "Glasgow Case". Contains letters and press cuttings relating to an abortion case at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where the baby was alleged to have "lived" for a short time following the abortion operation, 1979.

Folder 3 of 3: "Chertsey Baby". Contains press cuttings relating to a baby born prematurely after 23 weeks pregnant. The gynaecolosit and obstetrician who delivered the baby called for abortion laws to be scrapped as a result. Also contains "Live Baby and Staffs Coroner" press cuttings relating to a case where a baby was born breathing after an abortion at the North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary.
