Project description:The research group at Queen's University, working with teachers representing a number of subject areas, is proposing to, Identify appropriate and achievable learning objectives in relation to the critical reading of 'newspaper science' for Key Stage 3, 4 and post-16. It is anticipated that this phase of the project would involve extended discussions with those representing a wide range of interests - cross-curricular, cross-disciplinary and cross-professional; Devise criteria for selecting appropriate newspaper articles; Develop approaches to the use of such articles in the classroom; Promote professional development in this domain, exploring the potential of cross-curricular collaboration; and, building on lessons learned through the implementation and evaluation of these developments in a number of schools Prepare resources to support the use of newspapers in schools to help students to respond critically to media reports of issues with a science component and so to contribute, in an important way, to their general literacy, scientific literacy and citizenship education.
