Material relating to Jim Nicholls' life with diabetes: 1 diary and 1 small folder of 16 photographs relating to his experiences being treated for diabetes in the 1920s (diary of pre-insulin treatment and photographs at the time that he was treated with insulin as one of R. Lawrence's very early patients).

Previously included 1 tape cassette named "Jim Nicholls' Reminisces" but this has been removed for digitisation, 05/03/2013. Tape documented interviews of Jim by his daughter Bridget Wilkins, recorded in his late 80s in which he talks about his life with diabetes. a transcript of the tape is included in the file

Biographical note

Jim Nicholls was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1928 (at the age of 17), only seven years after the hormone insulin was discovered in a laboratory outside of Toronto, Canada. After a series of fortunate events he became under the care of Dr R. D. Lawrence (co-founder of Diabetes UK), who was also diabetic and was one of the first people in England to be treated with insulin himself.
