Biographical note
Jim Nicholls was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1928 (at the age of 17), only seven years after the hormone insulin was discovered in a laboratory outside of Toronto, Canada. After a series of fortunate events he became under the care of Dr R. D. Lawrence (co-founder of Diabetes UK), who was also diabetic and was one of the first people in England to be treated with insulin himself.
