    Anderson’s College Medical School, Secretary’s Chambers, 50 West Regent Street, Glasgow, 24th August, 1900. SAMSON GEMMELL, ESQ., M.D., F.F.P.S., 17 WOODS IDE PLACE, GLASGOW. Dear Dr. Gemmell, Referring to your application for the Chair of Clinical Medicine in the University of Glasgow, the Governors desire at this time to express to you their appreciation of the excellent work done by you at the School since you were appointed to the Chair of Practice of Medicine in 1880. From the first your class has been well attended by students not only of the School itself but of other schools of medicine. On referring to your Class Reports for recent years, the Governors note that the number of your students has varied from 83 to 125, the number last year being 113. That you have attracted so large a number of students to a class in an extra-mural school is of itself strong testimony to your capacity as a teacher, and, in the opinion of the Governors, would afford good ground for antici- pating for you even greater success within the walls of the University, if the Chair for which you are now applying were conferred upon you. The Governors believe that your appointment to the Chair of Clinical Medicine would strengthen the name of the University as a teaching centre, and would be to the best interests of the students, combining as you do an intimate and practical knowledge of the subject with the gift of imparting your knowledge to others. The Governors would naturally regret to lose so able a member of their Teaching Staff, but they wish you success in your candidature, and they would have every confidence in asking the Members of the University Court to give your application their most favourable consideration. If you think that this letter would be of any service to you in your candidature, you are at liberty to make such use of it as you may think right. It is addressed to you in terms of instructions given by the Governors at a meeting specially called to consider what steps should be taken by the Board in connection with your application, and it is signed by us on their behalf.
