Biographical note

Project Summary:This project aims to put the National DNA Database (NDNAD) on trial. Participants at this trial consist of young people aged 16-19 whose details are already on the NDNAD. Initially focus groups with up to 80 young people will be run at a Magistrates’ Court in South Wales. At these sessions those taking part will be introduced to information and issues surrounding the use of DNA using a Democs-style game, Discuss DNA. From these groups, eight witnesses and 12 jurors will be selected to conduct a trial at Cardiff Crown Court in November 2008 during Inside Justice Week. An invited audience of 100 people will also vote electronically on the issues. A Trial summary will be produced and disseminated widely, including to the Human Genetics Commission (HGC). The young people will also present their findings directly to the HGC and the Welsh Assembly.
