About this work

Description

The Maternity Services Committee existed to further the representation of users of maternity services, and to maintain and improve maternity services to ensure that parents were enabled to make informed choices and had access to adequate services.

The Committee aimed to facilitate the local implementation of NCT policy on the provision of maternity services, and to achieve an active Maternity Services Liaison Committee with adequate consumer representation in each District Health Authority. The Committee developed the POB (Person on an Outside Body) scheme of members representing the NCT on external groups or committees concerning maternity issues, often campaigning for improved maternity services. The MSC produced a quarterly POB sheet for registered People on Outside Bodies. In 1995, the MSC proposed a name change for user representatives, from Person on an Outside Body (POB) to Maternity Services Representatives, or Reps. The name of the MSC newsletter was subsequently changed from "Pobsheet" to "Rep Rap".
