Biographical note

From the outset the Family Discussion Bureau was committed to "evolve methods of training and consultation with allied professional groups in the handling of marital and related family problems as these present in their own setting or field of work". A variety of initiatives were undertaken. These included training schemes, casework seminars and courses with allied groups of social workers from local authorities, voluntary organisations and probation officers; weekly seminars on marital counselling techniques for individual caseworkers from various fields; and projects in collaboration with universities and overseas organisations. In the 1960s there was also a one-year advanced course in casework focused on marital interaction which required students to spend 2 days each week in their own or a similar agency and 3 days at the Bureau.
