Biographical note
Dr Antony J Duggan joined the Sleeping Sickness Service in Nigeria in 1944, trying to control the tsetse fly population. He returned to England in 1953 and began working for the museum for many years as Bozman's deputy, before taking over as Director in 1964. He was responsible for updating much of the museum and only retired in 1984 when the museum was transferred to the Wellcome Tropical Institute. The files include his research interests and correspondence with academic colleagues; his writings for different audiences and his obligations to professional organisations. During his tenure the visitor numbers of the museum increased rapidly and it opened up to non-traditional classes of visitors. He was involved in the education of curators through acting as an external examiner and was closely involved with the Museums Association.
