About this work
These records relate to the administrative functions and activities occurring within the museum, its correspondence sent and received, managing staff and the building facilities, as well as arranging and amending exhibits and acquiring and disposing of specimens. It also contains papers relating to individual staff that played a major part in the museum's development. The records are arranged into three series: Correspondence, Curator's Papers and Museum Functions.
Approximately 60% of the total of this collection was appraised as ephemera and destroyed. This material was either not concerned directly with the work of the museum; was based around the work of other organizations, and thus duplicated elsewhere; or was related to purely administrative arrangements rather than substantive subjects. Examples include requests for reprints or copyright clearances for images; circulars from other organisations, societies and the Wellcome Foundation; records relating to maintenance and repairs to the buildings.
These records belonging to the WMMS remained in the custody of the Wellcome Foundation until the [1980s]. They were then transferred to the Wellcome Trust and stored offsite until weeding and cataloguing in 2011.
