About this work

Description

These seven albums cover the early career of Georgina Maud Weller from Leyton, Essex, and Norfolk, a masseuse who trained at Chelsea Physical Training College from 1912 to 1915. She was awarded a certificate in Massage in Jun 1915 (see Journal, Jul 1915, List of Successful Candidates), and became a full member of the Incorporated Society of Trained Masseuses in Sep 1915 (see Register of Members 1914-17, Certificate no. 3094).

Miss Weller left college in 1915, before completing her examinations for the college diploma, in order to join the APMC. She was stationed first at a new camp for convalescent servicemen at Eastbourne, later at a country house converted into a military hospital at Mongewell, Oxfordshire.

After the war Miss Weller completed her training in medical gymnastics, passing the examination in Nov 1921. (See minutes of Training and Registration Committee, Jan-Apr 1921).

The earlier photograph albums, 1913-1920, show aspects of the training of a masseuse and illustrate the physiotherapy treatment given to convalescent servicemen in this country during the First World War.
