Biographical note

The Liverpool Project was a joint venture in association with the HEC. The aim of the project was to communicate effective health education messages about responsibility in personal and sexual relationships, particularly to those aged 16-19, by using all possible channels in the community, including schools, health services, parents' organisations, the media, the churches, voluntary organisations and the youth service. The objective was to improve sexual responsibility and to reduce the rates of unintended teenage pregnancy, abortion and STDs. The outline of the project was developed in two years' work by the HEC Health in Human Relationships Programme Steering Group. It was approved in principle by the HEC in 1982 and Dr John Ashton of the Department of Community Medicine at Liverpool University was asked to submit a detailed project. This was developed with HEC staff and approved by Output Committee in 1983 with a grant going to Liverpool University in December 1983 to carry out further consultation with all parts of the Liverpool community.
