Biographical note
Chain's connection with WHO began in 1948. He served on the Expert Committee on Antibiotics (later designated Expert Advisory Panel on Antibiotics) from its inception in 1950. The International Research Centre di Sanità was one of the research stations affiliated to the WHO, accepting WHO Fellows for research and training. Many of the conferences organised by Chain in Rome (see Section C) were held under the auspices of this Scheme. From 1971 the Expert Advisory Panel on Antibiotics was integrated in the Expert Advisory Panel on Biological Standardization on which Chain was invited to serve.
