Biographical note
Southern Counties Asylum was designed by W. McGowan in 1846 and was built between 1848 and 1849. Extensions were made to Southern Counties Asylum in 1858 and 1863 due to overcrowding and the demands on the existing accommodation. The plans for the extensions in 1858 were drawn up by William L. Moffat, but were executed by Dumfries architect Alexander Crombie (1812-1880).
