    ANNUAL REPORT OF THE MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH FOR THE « ROYAL BURGH OF ROTHESAY FOR THE YEAR ENDING 31st DECEMBER 1896. The estimated population of the Burgh in the middle of the year was 9546, and the number of deaths registered during the year was 153. This gives an annual mortality of 16 per 1000 persons living. 32 of the deaths have been marked by the Burgh Registrar as being those of visitors resident in the town for only a very short time, if these be deducted from the total number, the remaining 121 deaths show a mortality of 12'67 per 1000 persons living. The ordinary or crude death-rate obtaining in a locality is notoriously a poor guide towards forming an idea of the excellence of the public health of the place. The Infantile Mortality and the Zymotic Mortality are often adduced as more trustworthy criteria. I. The Infantile Mortality, or the annual number of deaths of infants under one year of age to every 1000 births during the same year, stands this year for Rothesay at 57-4. 209 : 12 :: 1000 : 57-4 This is an exceptionally low figure and is less than half the average rate for the whole country.
