About this work

Description

Folder 1: Correspondence concerning the use of electrostatic precipitators to assess carcinogenic substances in domestic smoke and related matters, including anti-smog protections. Includes correspondence regarding the use of electrostatic precipitators to collect samples of atmospheric pollution, and to investigate airborne radioactive materials, and correspondence regarding loaning of precipitator equipment. Includes correspondence with the MRC Group for Research on Atmospheric Pollution and a reprint from the The British Medical Journal "Some Observations on London Fog" by Robert Waller and Patrick Lawther (1955).

Folder 2: The Construction and Performance of Unit Type Electrostatic Precipitators for Anti-Smog Protection

Folder 3: Correspondence concerning plans for a meeting on electrostatic precipitators, 1955. Includes correspondence from Mayneord to doctors concerning a request from MoH for information about the use of electrostatic filters for air conditioning for the treatment of cases of bronchitis admitted to hospital during the winter. Includes excerpt from The Royal Sanitary Institute "A Review of Smog" by D Layne.

Folder 4: Correspondence regarding the potential development and manufacture of electrostatic precipitators for use by the Ministry of Health; measurement of radioactivity of the atmosphere in Glasgow; the introduction of diesel engined buses in London; smog protection and masks; and other matters concerning pollution, fog, and the use of electrostatic precipitators. Also includes minutes, notes and papers from a number of MRC conferences, including: "Atmospheric Radioactivity and Cancer of the Lung" (1954); "The Aetiology of Respiratory Disease in Relation to Atmospheric Conditions" (1953); "Carcinogenic Substances in Domestic Smoke" (1953) and a report by R C Turner and W Anderson on Atmospheric Radioactivity (1954).
