The Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology was established in 1983 and is part of the Foundation of Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH), one of the largest research centers in Greece. It is based in Heraklion, Crete. Ashburner was a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee 1989-1997 and was Chair 1989-1994.
