Description

1 autograph letter, signed (no. 5), plus a typed transcript made by the manuscript dealer J.L.M. Gulley (no. 6). The letter is to his former captain Edward Augustus Down (1777-1855) and written on board Down's former ship H.M.S. Redwing; it describes Clarke's ill-health and asks Down for a reference describing his service under Down. Other persons mentioned include Sir John Gordon Sinclair (d.1863), commander of the Redwing after Down; William Vesey Fitzgerald (d.1843), Chancellor of the Irish Exchequer; Sir William Scott, later Baron Stowell (1745-1836), Judge of the High Court of Admiralty; Lieut. Henry Hire (fl. 1808-1823), of H.M.S. Scout; and Lieut. William Webster (fl. 1814).
