    3 | Priestland? s Improved Lye Lotion. NOW KNOW YE, that I, the said Thomas Priestland, do hereby declare the nature of my said Invention, and in what manner the same is to j be performed, to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement in writing, that is to say:— 5 This Invention relates to and consists in the compounding and making of an improved preservative and curative liquid preparation or decoction to be used or applied as a wash or lotion for weak or dim eyes, and for j the cure of disorders or diseases of the human eye. * j The improved preparation is compounded and made of the following 10 ingredients and in the following proportions, namelyOf white cop¬ peras and of orris root of each about two ounces, and of white sugar- candy (or other pure saccharine matter) about four ounces, and the whole is to be mixed with one gallon of pure distilled water. These ingredients (the proportions of which it may in certain cases be found 15 desirable to vary) are to be boiled together for a suitable time, and then strained. The improved liquid resulting therefrom may be applied to the eye with soft linen or other suitable material or substance. Having now particularly described the nature and object of my said Invention, together with the manner in which the same is to be or may | 20 be performed or carried into practical effect, I would remark in con- j elusion that I claim as my Invention, the preparation and application or use of the improved preservative and curative liquid, compounded substantially as herein-before described for the cure of disorders or diseases of the human eye. 25 In witness whereof, I, the said Thomas Priestland, have hereunto set my hand and seal, this Pirst day of May, in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and seventy-five.
