GENTLEMEN During the fifty-two weeks ending January Ist, 1898, the total number of births registered in London amounted to 133,618, and the deaths to 80,943. The birth-rate, marriage rate, and death-rate are calculated from an estimated population of 4,463,169. The birth-rate was 30.0 per thousand of the population, and was the lowest on record. It is .2 per 1,000 less than that for 1896. The marriages numbered 41,223, and the rate per 1,000 was 18 .5 which is the highest recorded since 1878. The deaths as stated above numbered 80,943, and corresponded to a rate of 18.2 per thousand, the average rate in the previous 10 years having been 19.9. Included in the above total are the deaths of Londoners who died in Metropolitan Institutions outside London, and also those of strangers who had been admitted into London hospitals and infirmaries from districts outside the boundaries. If these be excluded the death-rate of London as a whole will be reduced to 17.7 per thousand. Below are shown the births and deaths, together with the birth-rate and death-rate for the whole of London, arranged in tabular form, with the corresponding figures for the five sub-districts, the deaths of Londoners who died in institutions, outside its boundary being included.
