No. 3. “ En aliud arcanum naturae vita ipsa vix minus mirabile.” PESTILENTIAL EPEDEMICS (CHOLERA.) The above euphonical latinity which has clung to my he pages of the Conspectus is, I think, an appropriate leading to the subjects left for me to deal with in this bird and last chapter on epidemics. The pestilence tcnown by the name of Cholera. The malignant fevers \vhich under the designations of Pali Plague and Maha- inurree bear such a resemblance to the pestis of authors t'f they are not the identical disease, the epidemic fevers \vhich in some jails have been so malignant and peculiar us to cause suspicion of contagion and the deadly visita- ions of disease of late described from the Banks of the .nffus, these form the subject of this paper. It is surely a hidden thing or mystery of nature that n 1817* an epidemic disease which if known before, had certainly not been seen lately appeared in Jessore, a district >f Bengal—that from that time to the present it has never mtirely disappeared with us—at times seizing a victim Sporadically—at others lighting up into the blaze of a most deadly visitation—now in one, then in another locality—in one season—notin another—that it is obedient to no laws »f appearance spread or conveyance which we can always * My own belief has always been and has been published, that Cholera is ■ escribed by Celflus Aretedeus and Sydenham, and see Dr. Bascomb on epidemic estilences, page 21—describing the disease in A.
